Bir Monastery

Bir in the Kangra district is home to a Tibetan refugee settlement with several Buddhist monasteries and a large stupa. Bir is also a noted centre for eco-tourism, spiritual studies and meditation.

Here is Chokling Gompa which is the monastery of Neten Chokling Rinpoche, a reincarnate lama in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and the director of the film Milarepa of 2006. 

The Tibetan architecture and large stupa are the major attractions for the casual visitors. 

In addition to its ongoing programmes for its full-time monastic students, the monastery periodically hosts Buddhist ceremonies open to the public. There is a guest house and the restaurant in the premises.

Rewalsar Monastery

Rewalsar is very popular and famous for its floating islands of reed on sacred lake in the town. The town has strong Buddhist connections apart from its relations with Hinduism and Sikhism. 

There are three famous Buddhist monasteries which includes Debung Kagyud Gompa, Tso-Pema Ogyen Heru-kai Nyingmapa Gompa and Zigar Gompa dot the serene landscape.

According to Buddhist legendary, the monk Padmasambhava, started from this place to spread Buddhism to Tibet. There is also the Buddha cave in ridge area, it is believed to be the meditation spot for Padmasambhava Monk.

Kullu Buddhist Tour

In Kullu district, there are many tourist places, which are linked with Buddhism. The travel accounts of the Chinese pilgrim monk Hiuen Tsang state that the region is completely surrounded by mountains, containing a Stupa built by Emperor Ashoka where Buddha preached.

Guru Ghantaal Monastery

Famously known as Guru Ghantal Monastery, Gandhola Gompa was also founded by Guru  Padmasambhava 800 years ago. It is located 18 Km before from Keylong in the Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. 

It is known for its renowned Buddhist structures in the state. This monastery still preserves the wooden structure with pyramidal roofs, wood carving and the idols of Padmasambhava & Bajreshwari Devi. 

In the mid month of June every year Lamas and Thakurs celebrate Ghataal Festival.

Kardang Monastery

Kardang Gompa or Monastery is a famous Drukpa Lineage monastery and it is most important monastery in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. The associated village of Kardang was once the capital of Lahaul. The monastery has a huge white building bedecked with prayer flags.

Shashur Monastery

This Buddhist monastery is located is 137 km from Manali and situated in the Lahaul Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh in the northern India. It was built in 17h century by Deva Gyatso.

This monastery has large Thangka paintings, some of them over fifteen feet and wall paintings depicting all the 84 siddhas of Buddhism. In the month of June or July Chham is performed in the monastery.

Key Monastery

Key monastery is one of the biggest and the oldest monastery of the Spiti Valley. Key Gompa also serves as a religious training center for the Lamas.

The monastery was in news in year 2000, as the site of Kalchakra ceremony under the aegis of His Highness Dalai Lama.

The complex features beautiful scriptures and paintings of Buddha. Lamas practice dance, sing and play on pipes and horns in this exquisite monastery.

Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar Gompa is a village and also a monastery, a Buddhist temple in the district of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, India. Dhankar monastery is situated at high elevation of 3,894 metres above from the sea level. 

This popular Gompa is in Spiti Valley above Dhankar Village, between the towns of Kaza and Tabo. 

This monastery complex is built on a 1000-foot or 300 meter high spur overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers – one of the world’s most spectacular settings for a Monastery.

Lhalung Monastery

The Lhalung Monastery was one of the earliest Gompas of Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh, built by great Tibetan Buddhist Rinchen Zangpo.

The name Lhalung literally means ‘Land of the Gods’. It is belief’s that the Lhalung Devta is head of all the Devta’s of the valley and emerges from the Tangmar mountain beyond the village. 

This mountain is said to change colour depending on the moods of the Devtas or deities, Red showing anger, Yellow for happiness etc.

Tabo Monastery

Tabo monastery is a oldest and largest monastery in the Tabo village of Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh. It was founded by the Tibetan Buddhist Rinchen Zangpo. Tabo Monastery has nine temples, four decorated stupas and cave shrines. 

The monastery is known as “The Ajanta of the Himalayas” because of its frescoes and stucco paintings.

Nako Gompa

Nako monastery is located near Indo-China border in the Nako village of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh. The monastic compound in Nako enshrines the legendary footprints of the Guru Padamsambhava at the Lotsabaage Monastery. 

This 3636 meter high altitude village in Kinnaur is located near a clear lake also known as Nako.
